Rain makes people run for cover; an umbrella makes them walk. It is the obvious item for a campus that spends half the year wet, and it has a second, much better use: on a gusty day it turns a fall into a slow, drifting descent. A canopy that is sometimes shelter and sometimes a bad parachute is a gadget with two clear buttons.

How it fits. It is one more held item, so it needs an icon, a label and a pair of uses, nothing new in the inventory. The primary use opens and closes the canopy; the alternate use holds it overhead or commits to a glide. The walker already has support height, falling and a landing; an open canopy adds drag and sideways drift to that state rather than becoming a vehicle. Rain blocking comes from the weather work when it lands, and the canopy only needs to hide the rain that would have hit the player.

Scope.

  • An open/close canopy and a hand pose for each state.
  • Rain kept off and a drip at the rim when open.
  • Fall drag, sideways drift and a softer landing while gliding.
  • A gust that turns it inside out, and a moment to fix it.
  • Roof routes that make the glide worth carrying it for.
  • Shop stock: a plain umbrella and a loud, expensive one, with no gameplay difference.

Related. #48 (rain), #186 (wind), #145 (skydiving), #213 (climbing).
