A giant chess set on a lawn is a landmark as much as a game: people stop, watch, and take a side. It also gives the campus a slow, turn-based thing to do outdoors, which is a nice counterweight to the races.
How it fits. The board is a baked or authored prop grid; pieces are props with a cell position. Moving is an interaction: pick up, carry and place, with the legal moves checked by a small rule set. Jenga is the same kind of prop with a physics stack, and checkers is the same board with different pieces.
Scope.
