Rain is a weather state; a thunderstorm is an event. A darkening sky, a first distant rumble, lightning that lights the campus for a frame, and rain that drums on roofs and awnings. It makes shelter meaningful and gives the interiors a reason to exist.
How it fits. The weather system owns the rain; a storm adds a cloud state, a lightning schedule and a thunder delay based on distance. The lightning flash is a temporary light and exposure pulse; the thunder is a positional sound at a virtual strike. Rain-on-surface audio is a per-material bed.
